Studio Update 1/6/2010
I was able to get alot of painting in yesterday and finished up the last 3 Daughters of the Flame, just need to paint up the bases.
And I started mass painting on the Homogaunts for the Tyranid army.
I will be finishing them up tomorrow and will be posting pics soon after.
I have been getting people asking me about my painting service. Will I be starting it back up or am I no longer taking any commissions.
I didn't know I was that popular! = )
So I have been re-thinking my decision to stop the service. I really enjoy it and rather be painting than my currant job. It's more enjoyable.
In fact I would really like to run it full time.
Will see if the demand is there. I might just have to re-open it ; )

New Resculpts for MK II

I really like them all. Much better than the original ones. I will be picking up all of them. Even if it's just to paint them.

Lord of the Rings: Ringwraiths

I have begun my Lord of the Rings project. And what better way to start than with my favorite evil charactors, the Ringwraiths.

Black can be a very tricky color to paint. You shouldn't really add grey to the mix to highlight. It just turns out to be more grey than black and looks faded. In fact black clothing has a bit of blue highlights or a bit of greenish grey, depending on the fabric and what you want to acheive. I wanted more of a "Boogy man" at night kinda look.
So I used mainly P3 paints on these. And Coal Black was an obvious choice to highlight over the black. Coal Black is a very nice Blue Black color and is one of my favorites. I drybrushed this over the cloth and added Cryx Bane Highlight to the Coal Black for highlights. Cryx Bane H.L. is a nice grey with a touch of green. After a few drybrushed highlights. I gave the whole model a wash of Devlan Mud to dirty and age the look. Then added a couple more highlights by layering on more Cryx Bane H.L. to the Coal Black mix.
Added mud splatters on the bottom of the robes with a light drybrush of Beast Hide, followed by 'Jack Bone. I also used these colors on the base to tye the whole model together.
The metals had a basecoat of Pig Iron, followed by a wash of Bloodtracker Brown, a second wash of Greycoat Grey. Then a light drybrush of Pig Iron, Cold Steel and finally a edge highlight of Quick Silver on the sword blades.
I am really pleased with how they look and am looking forward to adding more minatures to my Lord of the Rings collection.

Edit: added a close up of one of the Ringwraiths.
Daughters of the Flame Part 1

These were a nice change from the Temple Guard. On these models I am using a mix of P3 paints and Reaper Master Series paints.
I have the last three about 30% done at this point.
The box set had a slight mixed up with the models. It had an extra leader body, so with the permission from the client. I did a simple arms swap conversion to add variety to the models. I think they came out pretty good.

All Good Things...
Well here we are at the end of another year. Geez, where did the time go. Had some good times and bad times. Ups and downs...Yadda yadda!
Annocement:
Due to real life obligations, ie: Family life and work.
I am no longer taking any new commission work for the forseeable future.
I will be finishing up my current commission work as soon as possible. And once they are finished. I will not be accepting anymore.
I will still be painting for my own collection and maybe the occasional game here and there.
And so, All Good Things Must Come To An End... Yadda yadda!
Thank you,
Kerry

Studio Update 12/27/09
Now with the holidays done. I am able to get back to the painting more often.
-I started work on the unit of 6 Daughters of the Flame tonight and have about 20% done on the first batch of three.
-I have 11 Homagaunts assembled and primed ready to start after the Daughters.
-And I have begun on assembling and cleaning a unit of 10 Satyxris Raiders.
For Christmas I got the three Journey books for the Lord of the Rings game from Games Workshop. The books are designed to collect and play through the story of Lord of the Rings depicted in the movies and books. This will be another on-going project for me. And I will be posting the first part within the next day or so.

Project Cryx MK II Part 1: Battle Box

Warcaster Denegra

Bonejack Defiler

Helljack Slayer

The pic for the two Deathrippers came out blurry. I will update this post with a better pic within the next day.
I didn't want to spend too much time on these. And I used the painting guide from the Studio Showdown article in No Quarter #19.
Over a black primer I painted all of the metals with Pig Iron. Once dry I made a mix of 2:1 Bloodstone and Khador Red Highlight. Added Mixing Medium and Water to mix and painted the wash over the metal to create a rusted look. Once dry I applied a light drybrush of Cold Steel, followed with a drybrush of Quick Silver over the edges of the weapons and the highest points on the steel.
I picked out some key points with Blighted Gold, applied the same rusted wash and then a light dry brush of Blighted Gold, followed by Quick Silver on the extreme edges.
The plates and cloth was reapplied with Thamar Black. Stipple Coal Black, Coal Black/Cryx Bane Highlight 50/50 mix, Cryx Bane Highlight on the armor plates. The cloth was layered with the same formula.
Denegra's skin was done using the Dead Skin Triad from Reaper.
The bone areas was given a basecoated with 'Jack Bone, washed with Ogrun Flesh Wash (GW), layered 'Jack Bone (leaving the wash in the creavices), then a 'Jack Bone/Menoth White Base 50/50 mix, and finally Menoth White Base on the highest points. Devlan Mud (GW) was used to add shadow and blackline the teeth from the skull. Layered Menoth White Base, 50/50 mix of Menoth White Base/Menoth White Highlight, and Menoth White Highlight at the tips.
Glued sand mix to base. Basecoated with Thamar Black, drybrushed a Cryx Bane Highlight, followed by a final drybrush of 'Jack Bone. Base rim was painted with Thamar Black.
I think they came out quite nice and looking forward to adding on to the army.
